BMW Adds Hybrid Drive to Sporty Sedans

BMW recently announced plans to add hybrid versions of its 3- and 5-Series sport sedans.  The new sedans, named the 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 and 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 3, were introduced January 9, 2012 at the Detroit Auto Show. The ActiveHybrid 5 is slated to appear at dealerships like Lauderdale BMW of Pembroke Pines, serving the greater Miami, FL area, in the spring of 2012, while the ActiveHybrid 3 is set to arrive in fall 2012.

These new BMW vehicles are powered by turbocharged, 300hp, in-line 6-cylinder engines, 55-horsepower electric motors, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Both vehicles also use start-stop technology to avoid idling at traffic lights or during high congestion traffic. An intelligent navigation system works with the engine to use as much electric power as is possible.

The Active5 is said to have a base price of $61,845 including delivery charge, but the 3-Series hybrid's price has yet to be announced. Both of these vehicles will be sold throughout the U.S., not only in select markets and have practical and appealing styling. There are very few changes from the traditional BMW 3-Series and BMW 5-Series vehicles on which the hybrid models are based. Both of the hybrids contain the traditional BMW internal combustion engine, which is not expected to go away anytime soon, but will begin to include more hybrid elements in most  new BMW models.
